Valve has abandoned the alien aesthetic of early prototypes for something far more industrial. The 2026 Steam Machine is a dense, anodized aluminum brick. It feels premium—cold to the touch and reassuringly heavy. It sits unobtrusively next to my receiver, blending into the shadows of my entertainment center.

Despite years of progress with Proton, kernel-level anti-cheat systems remain hostile to Linux. I tried to join my friends for a weekend Warzone tournament and had to switch back to my main Windows rig. While more developers are enabling Linux support, the biggest competitive shooters are still holding out. If you are a single-player RPG enthusiast or an indie game lover, you are golden. If you are a ranked grinder, stick to Windows or a traditional console.

VS Custom SFF PC

Building your own Mini-ITX rig gives you more raw power and Windows compatibility. But try building a PC with these specs, in a case this small, including a controller and OS license, for under $800. You can't. The value proposition here is absurdly good.
